About the event
According to the gospel of hip-hop dance artist Rennie Harris, “movement is how we worship life.” In his latest work, RENNIE HARRIS LIFTED! A GOSPEL HOUSE MUSICAL, spirituality and movement traditions intertwine. Inspired by the tale of Oliver Twist, this story of a young Black man’s healing and redemption through community is told through live gospel music, hip-hop dance theater, and the rich movement history of house dance, celebrating how these traditions hold our histories and strengthen our reawakenings. “A master at using hip-hop vocabulary to both probe and deliver profound pain and profound joy” (The New Yorker), Harris constructs landscapes attuned to the vitality of the human spirit, and the stories that carry us through.
